Keynote speaker Iván Marambio, president of Frutas de Chile, emphasized the importance of anticipating new consumer habits and global market dynamics in the cherry industry. “Cherry continues to be a profitable business, but it’s also an increasingly demanding one, where quality must be at the heart of everything we do,” he stated.
The 2022 cherry season presented a range of challenges, including logistical difficulties and a drop in prices in the Chinese market. Claudia Soler, executive director of the Frutas de Chile’s Cherry Committee, presented an overview of the season, highlighting the growth in shipments and total production. Shipments increased by 51% compared to the previous season, with a total of 626,014 tons shipped to markets around the world, mainly to China.
| Market Destination | Total Shipment Volume (tons) | Total Boxes (million) |
|---|---|---|
| China | 446,000 | 125.2 million |
| United States | 123,000 | 3.5 million |
| Japan | 40,000 | 1.1 million |
Despite the challenges, the committee focused on the Chinese market, allocating 74% of promotional resources to second and third-tier cities, expanding coverage through local actors. A marketing campaign was launched with new sales channels and formats to adapt to the market. Claudia Soler stated, “The season was affected by a series of factors, including the increase and concentration of volume, the Chinese economy, the quality of the fruit, and negative news.”
The committee is working on implementing quality standards that incorporate improvements in size, firmness, color, flavor, and packaging to ensure minimum firmness and sizes in line with demand. These standards aim to improve the overall quality of the cherries and increase demand in the market.
The Global Cherry Summit 2025 featured panelists such as Antonio Walker, Claudio Vial, Andrés Fuenzalida, and representatives from companies like Joy Wing Mau and Rabobank Asia. Market trends, commercial innovation, logistics, and sustainability were analyzed at the summit.
